Storeman, or Stock Clerks as they are also called, receive, unpack and check material into the stockman. The nature of the stock will depend on the type of business. Storeman keep records of items entering and leaving the stockroom. Damaged or spoiled goods are reported. They bring items to the sales floor and stock shelves.

An inventory is kept by the Storemen of all the products a business has for sale. Keeping this inventory updated is crucial for the success of the business. In modern businesses Storemen use barcodes to keep the inventory up to date. They use hand-held scanners connected to computers to keep the inventory records.

Storemen works in warehouses, stock rooms and shipping depots. Government institutions like the South African National Defence Force also employ Storemen to check and administrate huge volumes of stock such as clothes, shoes and even weapons.
