Bakers are responsible for the making and baking of items such as bread, rolls, cakes and pastries. Some bakeries boast specialised areas for bread, pies and confectionery.

The Baker’s tasks include mixing of dough, whereby all the correct qualities of flour, water, sugar, salt etc. are blended together according to set of recipes. After the blending, the dough has to be shaped in loaf sized rolls and placed in the oven. In some bakeries the bread baking process is fully automated. In these bakeries Bakers are trained to control the automated process and to carry out regular quality control tests. When coming out of the oven, bread has to be taken out of the pans and allowed to cool. It is then displayed or dispatched to outlets such as cafes and supermarkets.

In contrast to the routine of bread baking, confectionery offers much more scope to the creative baker. As people also “eat” with their eyes, it is important to present confectionery as attractive and mount-watering as possible to the prospective customer.
